Game Developers at Level Up KL 2022 Malaysia

Last week, the Weyrdworks team attended the annual Malaysian game developer conference, Level Up KL. Level Up KL is a three-day conference centered on game development, with talks from industry experts from around the world. It was an amazing opportunity to talk to fellow Malaysian game developers and learn about their inspiration, experiences, and challenges.

What is the Level Up KL?

Level Up KL is a conference that is held annually in Malaysia. The event started out as an initiative by the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation with the goal of making Malaysia a hub for game development. The conference has been going on for seven years now and it has continued to be the annual destination for many game developers in the region.

What Do Game Developers Do At Malaysia’s Game Conference?

Developers showed off their games at the exhibition. The event is split into 3 distinct days; Day one was a dedicated conference day for blockchain developers and investors which we were able to participate in networking with some amazing new ideas. Day two and three had a mix of 3 core events happening at the same time; A business networking program, games exhibition and knowledge sharing talks where game developers in Malaysia and others in the region shared their experience in the industry.

In previous years, Weyrdworks had been known to host the SEA Game Jam which happens to be the biggest gathering of multinationals for a 2 day hackathon. This game jam hosted a steady capacity of 100 developers from all over the region and sometimes beyond to put the brightest minds in game development together in hopes of generating new IPs. Unfortunately, as we are still edging out of the pandemic, the game jam was cancelled for this year.

Weyrdworks at The Event

At the exhibition, the Weyrdworks team was able to show our latest mobile game, Monster Nest, as well as our latest vertical slice of our PC game, Manual Overload. Both games received a lot of positive responses, which were helpful to the development team.

The team also attended many interesting tech and art talks as well as workshops to sharpen their skills on the latest technological advancements in the industry. Needless to say, there’s always room to improve in the games industry which is core to what makes working in the games industry so exciting.

Our Takeaways From Level Up KL

Being the first time the entire team got together for a public game developers event since the pandemic, this has been a huge morale boost for our passionate creators. We were able to network with a lot of key people in the industry; Community leaders, platform holders, government agencies and other Malaysian game developers ranging from mobile game developers to blockchain Web3 pioneers.

It was also a great opportunity to show what we could do as a company and share our vision. I would highly encourage anyone interested in the Malaysian video game industry to attend the next Level Up KL or any future Malaysian game developer conference coming up in the future. If you’ve missed the event, check out the conference talk schedules to get a gist of the exciting new frontier that the industry is constantly reaching towards.
